Hello There,
I'm back again with another decade of vintage stories and photos of Crossdresser, Transgender, and Gender Fluid Women, this time from the 1970s! I'll be formatting this post similarly to my first post from the 1960s with three fun stories from our feminine past. The 1970s were an interesting decade with quite a bit of cultural upheaval. Needless to say gender non-conformity continued and there is no shortage of material to share with you!
Of course I have to start off my 70s spotlight with some pictures of actual 1970s crossdressers and drag artists! It's interesting to see how the fashion and hair styling has evolved from the 60s.
Now that you've seen some examples of crossdressers from the 70s, like last time I've got three different examples of crossdressing in the 1970s! I've chosen these stories because of how they transcend time and can feel relatable even now. These are actually going to be images and words taken directly from crossdressers from the 70s who published their stories and advice and in various print publications. I haven't edited the content of any of them accept for length, and these are the exact words and pictures published in the 1970s.
Sandy
I figured like last time I'd start with a classic story of a young CD starting their journey into femdom. Today we have Sandy from 1971, whose story has some fun twists and turns. I always love a story of a passionate and excited young "girl" exploring their new self and Sandy certainly seemed to fall in love with the feeling of femininity:
I really don't know when I first started to enjoy dressing as a girl. All I can remember of my early childhood when I used to hear my mother say she wished I had been a girl. I am an only child. She used to dress me in little girl's clothes and say how cute I was. I guess the luxurious feel of girl's clothes never escaped me.
I remember my freshman year of high school I used to go and try on my mother's clothes when I was sure of my parents would be gone for a long while. Standing in front of a mirror and seeing the crude structure of a girl who resembled me was quite thrilling. I had just began to buy a few pieces of finery when I was called for army duty.
My first thought was how could I wear my girl's clothes at all the whole two years. I could just picture myself stuck in Vietnam where I couldn't even buy women's apparel. But to my surprise I was sent to Hawaii where I stayed the whole 2 years.
Hawaii has a place called "The Glade" where true transvestites gather and can dress and have great fun! They also have a fabulous show. Since it is not against the law there anyone can walk down Waikiki dressed how they like, whether he maybe boy or girl or whatever. So the only ones I had to watch for was the MPS (military police.)
I finally one night met and talked to one of the stars of the show who really seemed concerned and helped me in my problems. She took me home with her and for the first time in my life dressed me up like a real girl.
Black corset, bra, girdle, stockings, high heels, mini skirt (low cut), and platinum wig ..... She wouldn't let me see myself until she was finished but when she did .... W 0 W! It almost took my breath away. I was beautiful. So that night we went out to town (since I had already practiced walking and acting like a girl, it wasn't difficult to completely fool everyone. And when a doorman at the Illakai Hotel pinned an orchid on my 'mini dress, I felt a thrill which I can't described. When I walked into the lobby I could feel the men's eyes staring at my legs and breasts. I had a good cleavage since I exercise my chest muscles constantly. I was in gymnastics 4 years in high school so I can practice muscle control.
After the hotel show, we went to a discothe where Sheila and I were asked to dance time and again . One boy tried to kiss me but since I am not gay I warded off his advances. But the real c:incher was when I was awarded 3rd place in a dan e contest they held and the manager put the spotlight on me. That was when I knew I had achieved complete female impersonation. I felt so feminine at the moment and I wanted to cry. The night ended and after J returned every chance I could to dress again.
When I was discharged in April, 1970, I took my mustering out pay and went straight to a department store to buy clothes. I had shipped my car from Hawaii to San Francisco so I was driving home alone.
I bought a complete set of cosmetics including fake fingernails. After my car arrived I went to my motel, paid my bill and told them I would be leaving in about 2 hours.
I took a shower and put powder all over my body. I shaved my legs, under my arms; and used dermatologist wax to completely hide my eyebrows. Then I hid my manhood with a strong black girdle. Over that went a front lace corset which really set off my breast area. Then falsies and a push up black lace bra. Next came black mesh and also pink panties, Then came a pink - see - through mini dress with ruffled sleeves, long fingernails and pink polish. I next applied all make-up and bushy black eyelashes.
To top it off a platinum blonde wig came next.
I drove through 8 states like this feeling sexier every mile. It took me 2 1/2 days, since I only stopped for some food and gas. Then just before I arrived home I stopped at a motel I had reservations at and put my sexy self back in a suitcase.
Since returning home I dress whenever I possibly can. I have no one to help me or give me pointers but it is a beautiful life. I usually go to a motel, dress, and go out on the town in my car, taking care to evade the policemen. That is such a stupid law here. I now have everything from black push-up bras to custom corsets. I buy my clothes myself and always say they are for my girlfriend if they ask. I would like to meet an understanding girl who I could dress with and be her girlfriend. But I guess for now I will just have to settle for being .. . Sandy!
I certainly hope Sandy found that understanding girl she was looking for! If not it seemed that she was still content in just enjoying herself. But what an interesting story she had, to go from an excited new dresser, to joining the military, to wild escapades in Hawaii, all capped off with an 8 state journey of feminine fun! I love to think about how even 50 years ago people were still having secret girly adventures.
Since Sandy talked a lot about her favorite lingerie items, I figured I'd go ahead and share some vintage pics of lingerie ads from the 1970s, to see some of the things Sandy had to choose from.
Crossplay in the 70s?
So of course Crossplay is popular now among gender nonconformists as an opportunity to dress as a character of the opposite sex. I've done it several times as various Disney Princesses and Princess Peach, and I hope to crossplay as more characters soon! As I mentioned in my 2023 bucket list I hope to cosplay Wonder Woman soon. Wonder Woman just happens to be one of the most popular characters to be crossplayed.
People have been wearing her costume for quite a while in fact, and I've found an example of a crossdresser wearing her costume all the way back in 1976! In October 1976 the Houston Motorcycle club or HMC threw a Military Ball welcoming of the gay community, where participants were encouraged to dress in 1940s themed military attire. By all accounts the ball was a smash hit, with quite a few attendees wearing great 40s themed outfits.
In addition to the men wearing their 1940s clothing and uniforms, some of the men in attendance chose to come dressed as women. They all seemed to have a great time being out and about En Femme. The one in the women's military uniform in particular seemed to be a real riot! But the person that stood out the most to me by far was one of the men who actually came dressed as Wonder Woman! Wonder Woman was created in 1941 so the person wearing the costume was totally in line with the 1940s theme! The whole ensemble is there with the red corset, blue and white starred skirt, and the tiara! They are instantly recognizable as the Amazon warrior from Themyscira and seem to be having quite a bit of fun taking in all the attention!
Almost 50 years later and Wonder Woman is still being cosplayed by people all over the world. She has become such popular character for gender nonconformists in particular because of her strong association with feminism, and inclusivity, also her costume is pretty darn awesome! In dedication to this cosplayer from the 1970s and since I don't yet have any pictures of myself as Wonder Woman, I've added some modern crossplays of her below so we can all see and enjoy the different times crossdresser's have brought Wonder Woman to life!
Our next story comes from Cindy and features slips, which you all know I am certainly a fan of! Published in 1979 Cindy tells the her true life account of a trip her and her wife took during which Cindy purely dressed as woman! Of course she struggles to stay modest and keep her slip from showing:
I go out maybe once or twice a year dressed. The last time my wife and I traveled to another town. "My wife is very understanding" I left town with a dress on, and no men's clothes at all, just woman's. The drive was about 130 miles one way. I don't think my heart never did beat a normal beat the hole trip.
After arriving and getting a motel room I decided I wanted a coke. So I went to the machine in my dress and got one. On my way back to the room I ran into four maids. They walked by me like they couldn't tell I was really a man. I felt so good that one could tell I was really a man.
That night I put on a real nice dress and we went out to dinner. My wife ordered for me and once again no-one noticed. By this time I was really felling good, so we went to a movie house. I went up to the window and bought two tickets and gave them to the door man. I was on cloud nine. We went in and sat down. I took off my coat and started to watch the movie.
When I sat dowm it was my wife on my left and nobody on my right. About ten min. later two teenagers (boys) sat down next to me. To add to the problem I had on a semi short dress on. I froze dead still for a moment. I looked down at my legs and with my luck my slip was showing. I tried to with-out being noticed to pull my dress down a little to cover my slip up. The guy noticed me doing this, he turned to his friend and said; the girl next to me is pretty, and has nice looking legs. He managed to bump my leg with his hand and moved my dress so that my slip was once again showing. He said he was sorry, and I said nothing. I covered up my slip once again.
After the movie we went back to the motel room. Then I decided to take a walk. As my luck would have it a man started to fallow me. He did his best to talk to me but I went into our motel room. I got undressed and removed my make-up and put on my nighty and went to bed. The next morning it was raining so we decided to go home early. I asked my wife to buy me some men's clothes. She said NO. So I put on my make-up and another dress. We packed the car and we were ready to go.
My wife told me to drive, I started to drive when I noticed we had to have gas. I pulled into the gas station. The attendant came over to fill up our tank. He said fill-it , I nodded my head yes. He came over to wash our front window and he was staring at my legs. I looked down at my legs and my slip was showing again.
After getting home my wife asked me if it was easy, I said: NO. But I learned its a full time job checking on your slip to make sure its not showing.
Well it sounds like Cindy certainly had a fun trip! Stressful, but fun! It's always a thrill to go out in public while dressed and to have the support of your wife is a great bonus. I also can't help but chuckle at all the times Cindy accidently showed of her slip, and the that boy trying to catch a glimpse of it in the theater ooh la la! Here are some examples of slips she may have been wearing!
And in dedication to Cindy's thrilling tale of showing slips here are some photos of me showing mine!
I've also got a little bonus section for you; as I was combing through old magazines looking for images for this blog post I happened upon some old comics which made light of crossdressers. Some of them are both relatable and pretty humorous so I thought I would share them with you here. Looks like CDs sense of humor hasn't changed much in 50 years LOL.
